The last Roman king, Tarquinius the Proud, ruled from 534 to 509 BC after unlawfully overthrowing his predecessor. He ruled through fear, acting as a judge and sentencing citizens to execution and exile without regard to the laws. • Tarquinius' son, Sextus, was commanding the Roman army during the siege of Ardea when he and his friends invited Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus to a feast. During the feast, the men decided to surprise their wives to see who was the most virtuous. They found that Collatinus's wife, Lucretia, was the only one working late into the night. Captivated by her beauty, Sextus devised a vile scheme. • A few days later, Sextus visited Lucretia and, after everyone was asleep, threatened her with a sword. He said he would kill her and a slave, then claim he caught her in adultery if she resisted. Faced with this threat, Lucretia submitted to the violence. The next morning, she summoned her husband, father, and two other men to tell them what had happened. After doing so, she took her own life, urging them to avenge her. • The men swore to overthrow Tarquinius and his family. They took Lucretia’s body to the forum, sparking an uprising that led to the expulsion of Tarquinius and the killing of Sextus. This marked the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the Roman Republic in 509 BC, with Lucius Junius Brutus and Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus as the first consuls. • Lucretia’s story has left a profound mark on European culture, inspiring works by Dante, Chaucer, Machiavelli, and Shakespeare, as well as numerous paintings by artists like Rembrandt, Titian, and Rubens. • #History #Miol #AncientRome #Lucretia #RomanHistory #RomanMonarchy #RomanRepublic #HistoricalLegends #ClassicalHistory
