21 Feb 2023 — Edmundston City Council joins other municipalities in Atlantic Canada in calling on the other two levels of government to work towards the implementation of a Guaranteed Basic Income to eradicate poverty and homelessness and to ensure that everyone has enough income to meet their basic needs. • In a formal resolution adopted at the February 21st public meeting, City Council states that the growing social crisis and the impacts of poverty are putting unsustainable pressure on the limited resources of municipalities. Municipalities must provide the necessary public services and social supports as they face increasing responsibilities transferred to them from different levels of government. • Like our municipal colleagues elsewhere in Atlantic Canada, we strongly believe that a Basic Income Guarantee would benefit individuals, families and communities, while protecting the most vulnerable. It would also support the resilience of communities by facilitating the transition to a local economy that responds to the climate crisis and other major challenges, explains Edmundston Mayor Eric Marquis. • To this effect, a letter will be sent to the Prime Minister of Canada, as well as to the Premier and Members of Parliament of New Brunswick in the next few days. • Source: / 514860227386413 • ——— • SUBSCRIBE for more videos on Basic Income in Canada • Follow UBI Works • Facebook: / ubiworkscanada • X: https://x.com/ubi_works • Instagram: / ubi_works • Tiktok: / ubiworks • Sign up for our email list: https://ubiworks.ca/join
