The DisneyFleischer Competition War

In recent years there has bee an assumption about a deliberate and heated competition between Disney and Fleischer. While they both held top positions in the field of animated cartoons by the 1930s, Fleischer was not at all interested so much in what Disney was doing because they had their energies directed on fulfilling their contract to produce cartoons for Paramount. The fact is that Disney was following Fleischer, and had been ever since he first got into the business in the early 1920s. Max Fleischer was already an established Producer when Disney was still a teenager and had one of the three top animated short subjects in the business along with FELIX THE CAT and MUTT AND JEFF. Then in his early 20s Disney started Laugh-O-Grams in Kansas City and went broke. If you have seen the first cartoons from Disney's Kansas City period, you see the ambition. He displayed a good sense for storytelling, but the animation technique was not up to what the New York studios like Inkwell, Sullivan/Messmer, Fables, Terry, and Barre' (later Animation Associates-Mutt and Jeff) were doing. But he and his associates studied them. Disney had the drive to beat out the competition. And one of the things he did on his visits to New York was to seek out Fleischer's Animators and lure them away to Los Angeles. Some did go. I was told by the Fleischer family that Disney was seen as an annoyance that came around every once in a while. But they didn't take him too seriously except for the frustrations of his luring away people they trained. So the impression that there was some back and forth going on to see who could out do whom is a wild fabrication of wishful thinking rather than what actually occurred. The fact is that Disney benefited from many of the techniques pioneered by others including those of Fleischer, and also benefited from the knowledge of those Animators who had gained experience in the east coast studios such as Fleischer's. But the deliberate head-to-head competition between the two Producers simply was not what happened. They existed within their own concepts of what animation was. • #fleischerstudios • #maxfleischer • #disneystudios • #waltdisney
