Yushan, aka Jade Mountain, is the tallest mountain in Taiwan. The main peak sits just under 13000’ (just under 4000m) above sea level, giving Taiwan the 4th higest maximum elevation of any island in the world. • The hike from the trailhead is about 15 miles long with about 5k ft elevation gain. We did walk extra 1.5 miles from the trailhead back to our car that day. Most hikers complete the hike in 2 days, staying in Paiyun Lodge about 5 miles in before the elevation gain gets steep. Many hikers who stay at Paiyun also hit up 4 other peaks on Yushan (East peak, North Peak, South peak, and West peak) while up there. Since we didn’t want to bring a lot of stuff with us (you do have to have your own cookware and sleeping bag for Paiyun), we did just the main peak for a day hike with light packs, took about 8 hours from trailhead to trailhead. • The trail is very well maintained, and is very beautiful. Sometimes you get the views of lower hills and gulley; sometimes you walk in tunnel of trees; sometimes you are walking on the exposed side of the mountain; and past the tree line you scramble on rocks. • According to people we’ve talked to, blogs, and other youtube videos, top of Yushan is usually super cloudy and with heavy mist and you get no view. We were very lucky that day and were able to get clear views of the mountains and hills around. The temperature in mid-November wasn’t bad, 40’s feels more like 50s, good with just a couple layers of clothing (best if outer layer has some wind block properties). • Created with the #GoPro App on my iPhone.
