In some cases, it can take 10 or 20 years. • Once you have ILR, you are eligible to apply for British Citizenship straight away, if you have a British spouse, or after 1 year of holding your ILR status. • Other requirements you need to pass are an English language test and a life in the UK test. Both of which you should have already passed to get to ILR. • The two other requirements are the residency requirements and the Good Character requirements. • The residency requirements mean that you must have been physically present in the UK on the date five years (or three if married to a British Citizen) before the application is received by the government's Home Office; • You must not have been absent for more than 450 (or 270 days) days in total during the 5 (or 3 year) year qualifying period, and not more than 90 days in the year immediately before the application is made; and • Must show an intention to live in the UK. • If you are aged 18 or over and have successfully applied to become a British citizen, you must attend a citizenship ceremony. • During the ceremony, individuals make an oath or pledge; the event is administered in the local authority by a registrar. • These measures are expected to be temporary. • Obtaining British Citizenship, unlike certain other countries, is a tried and tested process with clarity in the process and even certainty in the timings. • You are either entitled to British Citizenship or you are not. The only grey area in obtaining British citizenship is what is referred to as the Good Character Requirement . Under this provision, the UK government have a limited number of discretionary options to refuse your application. • It is anticipated that local authorities will resume providing group ceremonies in official premises once it is safe to do so and subject to national or local social distancing guidance following the COVID-19 pandemic. • The UK government have been working together to deliver solutions to the current coronavirus restrictions. • After applying for naturalisation, and successfully being granted, you are invited to attend a citizenship ceremony. You then have three months to arrange to attend your citizenship ceremony. • Due to coronavirus, the period over time to book a citizenship ceremony after receiving an invitation from the Home Office has been extended from 3 months to 6 months, to allow for greater flexibility. • Comment below on how your application to British citizenship went and what your thoughts are on the ceremony going online. • For more information or advice on British citizenship, reach out to your citizenship coordinator at IaM. • If you're still unsure about your application, let us help you out! • 👉https://immigrationandmigration.com/b... • ✈ Read the full article at • https://immigrationandmigration.com/ • ========================== • ✈ Apply for your British Citizenship at https://immigrationandmigration.com/i... to start your British citizenship application! • ========================== • ✈ Find us on social media: • .
