The speed of the exhaust gases and the contact angle at which it hits the turbine therefore changes, giving the turbocharger (TC) a broad operating range. • Closed guide rails (high angle of incidence) create a small flow area. This in turn generates high exhaust speed and good bottom torque. Open guide rails (low angle of incidence) create a large flow area and reduced exhaust speed. This prevents overrevving of the turbocharger. • The control module receives information about the position of the guide rails via a position sensor located in the vacuum tank. The engine control module (ECM) receives information about the engine load and speed. This affects the boost pressure that is permitted. The boost pressure is measured by the boost pressure sensor, located in the charge air cooler. • The turbocharger control valve regulates the vacuum to the vacuum tank which affects a rod via a lever which is connected to a moving ring in the turbocharger (TC). The moving guide rails are mounted on the ring.
