What do we use this for? • pH is a way to measure the relative strengths of acids and bases. We start this video with a quick review of the definition of acid and base, consider whether water is an acid or a base, and then work 3 examples of using the equation for pH. It's a base 10 logarithmic scale, where something with pH 5 is 10 times more acidic than something with pH 6. pH7 is neutral, and anything with a pH greater than 7 is considered basic (or alkaline), and anything with a pH less than 7 is considered acidic. Make sure to watch to the end so you can see the surprising pH of some of our everyday liquids! • ⬣⬣⬣ • LESSON CHAPTERS: • 0:00 What is pH? • 0:12 Arrhenius definition of an acid - aqueous solutions • 1:19 The pH scale • 0:42 Bronsted-Lowry definition - doesn't have to be aqueous • 1:45 The equation to calculate pH • 2:11 Is water an acid or a base? • 3:43 The pH scale (0-14) • 4:47 pH is a negative logarithmic scale • 5:29 Example 1 - lemon juice • 6:37 Example 2 - laundry detergent • 7:34 Example 3 - soda • 8:04 The pH of common liquids • SUBSCRIBE so you never miss a video! • http://bit.ly/SocraticaSubscribe • MORE Chemistry content on our website • https://www.socratica.com/subject/che... • ⬣⬣⬣ • SUPPORT our channel: • Patreon : / socratica • PayPal donation: https://www.paypal.me/socratica • Bitcoin : bc1qda47tgfyk67lxa7yqn8y5m02hjcglghsd5c58n • Thank you! • ⬣⬣⬣ • RECOMMENDED Books Resources: • Socratica Practice Tests: https://shop.socratica.com/collection... • How to Be a Great Student: https://amzn.to/3t5jeH3 • 239 pc Chemistry Molecules Model Kit: https://amzn.to/3DhlG3n • Brown and LeMay Chemistry: The Central Science • 14th edition: https://amzn.to/3fiLR1G • McGraw/Hill Chemistry by Chang Goldsby https://amzn.to/3UclbP3 • Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood by Oliver Sacks https://amzn.to/3ffeRau • Napoleon's Buttons: How 17 Molecules Changed History https://amzn.to/3sIXuBW • Products in this video: • Litmus pH Test Strips, Universal Application (pH 1-14), 2 Packs of 100 Strips - http://amzn.to/2fM8rLo • ⬣⬣⬣ • Written and Produced by Kimberly Hatch Harrison • About our instructor: • Kimberly Hatch Harrison received degrees in Biology and English Literature from Caltech before working in pharmaceuticals research, developing drugs for autoimmune disorders.
