PART 2 | After successfully landing the first-ever Boeing 767 without engines, investigators quickly discover that a faulty computer processor disabled the plane’s fuel gauges. There was no way for the crew to notice that they took off with only half the fuel they needed for the trip. Interviews with the flight crew and ground crews discover that the error which led to the fuel shortage involved basic math. In 1983 most planes in Canada used imperial measurements to calculate the amount of fuel required for a flight but the new 767 was outfitted with metric gauges. The plane needed 22,300 kilograms of fuel for the trip but was only given half that: 22,300 pounds. • A subsequent inquiry recommended better training for all airline personnel making fuel calculations. Pearson’s plane was repaired and put back in service; keeping the nicknamed it earned that day, The Gimli Glider. • From Season 5 Episode 2 Gimli Glider : Air Canada 143 (Boeing 767) It’s a calm summer evening when an inexplicable failure strikes – the loss of two engines on a brand new passenger jet midway between Montreal and Edmonton.
