Crusoe the Dachshund Had Back Surgery Again 😥 Two Week Update

Poor Crusoe suddenly hurt his back at the beginning of May, and immediately began walking slower with his back-left leg. Within a few days, he had lost almost all motor control of that leg, and the back-right leg was slowing as well. So we had to make the absolutely heartbreaking decision for a surgery once again... to at least give him a chance of walking again. • Crusoe is a #dachshund, and unfortunately 1 in 4 dachshunds will having intervertebral disc disease (#IVDD) in their lifetime. This means the discs between the vertebrae do not absorb impacts well, and can burst or bulge, pushing up against the spinal chord, causing pain and paralysis (full or just to a degree). • Crusoe had back surgery with Dr. Jull at the Vscan in Ottawa on May 5th. It's been a slow recovery (slower than the first time he had back surgery 6 years ago), but just in last few days we started seeing some progress. He is able to walk gingerly and place his back feet with the help of the sling. He still has a ways to go, but at least he is now on the road to recovery... • We continue to do diligently follow his physical therapy routine, including various stretches, weight balances, walking exercises, and more.
