Not sure if you should say '¿Cómo está?' or '¿Cómo estás?' Then this video is for you! In this lesson, you will learn how to properly ask how are you? in Spanish :) • Like in many other languages, in Spanish, we have a formal way and an informal way of addressing people. • '¿Cómo está?' means 'How are you?' and it's the formal way. We use it for asking people we don't know very much or the elderly. If someone asks you this question and you want to ask it back, you can say '¿Y usted?' (And you?). 'Usted' is the formal 'you'. • '¿Cómo estás?' means the same thing, but it's informal. We use it with our friends and family. During a conversation, you can use '¿Y tú?' (And you?) to ask the question back. 'Tú' is the informal 'you'. • And how do you answer this question? Super easy! • Estoy bien - I'm good • Estoy muy bien - I'm very good • Más o menos - So so • Así así - So so • No muy bien - Not so good • Estoy mal - I'm bad • Estoy muy mal - I'm very bad • There are many other ways of asking 'How are you?' in Spanish. A very popular one is '¿Qué tal?'. You can use it in both formal and informal situations. • EXTRA GRAMMAR INFORMATION * • In Spanish we have two different verbs for 'to be', SER and ESTAR. For answering this question we always use ESTAR because it's a temporary thing. We can feel bad and after a while feel great.
