The Nahuatl language is an Uto-Aztecan language, which happens to be the most widely spoken Indigenous language/family of languages in Mexico with almost 1.75 million speakers. The language has a lot of grammar that we couldn't cover in this video, but with its agglutinative system, sentences can become very long. All forms of Nahuatl spoken today did not derive from Classical Nahuatl, there were already some distinct varieties at the Empire's formation. The Aztec Empire spoke older forms of this language, just as Shakespeare spoke Early Modern English vs. our language today, and Classical Nahuatl was the language that the Empire spoke for the most part. This video goes over the modern form of the language, which mixes a few different variants. Phrases were given to me from my Nahuatl teacher when I studied the language. We cover grammar typical of the Aztec language, with examples clearly given and other features fairly typical of other Uto-Aztecan languages. Did you notice anything similar between Nahuatl and other Uto-Aztecan languages? • I used these two courses to learn Huasteca Nahuatl, and much of the grammar in this video, I learned from those: • Modern Aztec grammatical sketches: Studies in Uto-Aztecan grammar 2 • Langacker, Ronald W., editor. 1979 • Beller, Richard and Patricia Beller - Curso del náhuatl moderno: Náhuatl de la Huasteca, Vol. 1, 2, https://www.sil.org/resources/publica... • Classical Nahuatl resources (not used in the video): • Sullivan, Thelma D. : Compendium of Nahuatl Grammar. Salt Lake City 1988 • Humboldt, Wilhelm von (1767-1835): Mexicanische Grammatik. Paderborn/München 1994 • Try out the new LangShack Yizeek site at • www.langshack.club • to learn languages through your favorite interests with AI-generated content, personalized vocab lists, on-demand audio files for your texts for popular languages, with additional tools in development and tons of lesser-known, RARE and endangered languages coming out soon for those who love all the worlds languages! • For more language related content like this, subscribe to LangShack!
