Let Babies 411 show you how to take a baby's temperature under the arm and rectally. • Normal temperature is 97.6°-99.5°F. • Temperature can be done under the arm with a regular digital thermometer but is often not as accurate. • Rectal temperatures are the most accurate but can cause injury to the rectum if not taken properly. • Be sure to lubricate the end of the thermometer with petroleum jelly and insert the tip of the thermometer to no more than 1 inch. • If you are going to call the pediatrician, be sure to take a rectal temperature prior to calling.
