Savage has a way with barrels. Most of their guns I've tested shoot very accurately and their guns perform above their price level. Enter the Savage MSR-15 Patrol and Recon models, reviewed here. These Savage AR-15s enter a crowded market with such high value players as the Springfield Armory Saint, S W M P15 Sport II, Ruger AR556, and lots more. We cover a quality issue on the Patrol upper and it's discussed honestly. I count it as an anomaly from Savage but that upper failed to achieve good accuracy. • In the value department you'll get an upgraded handguard, BUIS, midlength gas system, good Blackhawk Axiom furniture, and a slightly better trigger on the Recon model [recommended]. The Patrol is a bit more basic but still good. Reliability was flawless unlike some other AR-15s tested [Ruger AR556] and the Recon model achieved sub MOA with 77 gr loads.
