Sodium sulfate, with the formula Na2SO4, is a salt used as a drying agent due to its great ability to absorb water in its structure, removing moisture from solvents. The synthesis will be by the reaction between sodium bicarbonate and sulfuric acid, following the equation: • 2 NaHCO3 (aq) + H2SO4 (aq) → Na2SO4 (aq) + 2 H2O (l) + 2 CO2 (g) • From the stoichiometry, the following was measured: • 59.14g NaHCO3 • 93.30g H2SO4 • 28.55g distilled water • The sodium bicarbonate is dissolved in hot water, the sulfuric acid is added little by little under strong stirring, when there is no more release of gas, it indicates that all the NaHCO3 has been consumed. After this, the system is stirred for a few more minutes and then heated until all the sodium sulfate dissolves, not exceeding 32ºC. If it does not dissolve, a little more water should be added. • After heating, the solution is filtered to remove insoluble impurities.
