Located in the county of Kent, approximately 30 miles/48km southeast of central London, is the town of Tonbridge. • The town is the site of a Norman castle which was positioned strategically adjacent to the River Medway which runs through Tonbridge. It was built shortly after the Norman invasion by the powerful de Clare family who rebelled against William II. In 1088 Richard de Clare surrendered following a two-day siege by royal forces. As punishment William ordered the castle and town to be burnt. The castle was later rebuilt in the 13th century. The gatehouse we see in the video was completed in 1260 and the original motte is intact. The castle would later be used as a Parliamentarian stronghold during the English Civil War. • Industries in Tonbridge include light engineering, printing and publishing, distribution and financial services and, from the 1880s to 1970s, cricket ball making. Tonbridge Athletic Club is where double Olympic gold medal winner Kelly Holmes trained from the age of 12. • The town's name was originally spelled with a 'u' instead of 'o'. It wasn't until the late 19th century when it switched its first vowel. This was apparently to remove confusion with the spa town, Tunbridge Wells, just four miles to the south. So that clears that up then, I guess. Another fun fact: when the steam trains first came to the area, the route from Tonbridge to Tunbridge Wells required the trains, from 1842 to 1857, to run in reverse. • The UK's very first speeding fine was issued in Tonbridge in 1896. The driver of a Benz automobile was fined one shilling for driving at 8 miles per hour in a 2 miles per hour zone. The reckless motorist was apprehended by a policeman who had given chase on his bicycle. • 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 • https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su... • Filmed: 21st January 2021 • Link to the walk on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/Rp8sSMRQbAptvKkw5 • Filmed on a Sony FDR-AX700 with a Zhiyun Crane 2 and a Rode Videomicro. • TIMESTAMPS: • 0:00 Barden Road • 1:16 High Street • 5:49 River Walk • 6:33 River Medway • 7:00 River Walk • 7:56 High Street • 13:02 Bank Street • 14:55 Tonbridge Castle
