Clay muds • [ Experiment 8.04] Laponite • After 3 days, the mixture of laponite powder and water is different from typical liquids which always adopt horizontal surfaces: it has transformed into a gel. When placed in a special beam of light called polarized light, photoelastic material changes colour when compressed or vibrated. The photoelasticity of laponite gel reflects its elasticity, which is a characteristic property of solids but not of liquids. A slightly viscous liquid injected into a laponite gel spreads according to certain shear planes. The gel appears to break like glass.
