#RebelRidge (2024): 7.5/10 • Director: Jeremy Saulnier • Runtime: 131mins • ⠀ • Jeremy Saulnier (‘Green Room’) brings us another fierce film in the shape of crime thriller Rebel Ridge, this time on Netflix. Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre, ‘Old’) is desperate to post bail for his cousin Mike before it’s too late, but is disrupted at every turn by a local police chief and a web of small-town corruption. • ⠀ • The resulting stand-off between Terry and the police builds tension exponentially right from the film’s opening scene - a clear exploitation of legal loopholes that only makes him all the more determined to see it through. Aaron Pierre adds to the tension throughout with many-a piercing look as Terry assesses his options - with Saulnier focusing squarely on his eye-line. Even the film’s more heightened sequences are restrained, but equally as effective - those hoping for an all out shootout may be left disappointed. • ⠀ • There is more to the story than meets the eye too. Courthouse employee Summer (AnnaSophia Robb) is sympathetic to Terry’s cause, but also appears to be a victim of the legal system she is serving, as infuriating as that later becomes when the police get involved. It’s an enjoyable slow-burn, even if it does feel its runtime by the end. • ⠀ • What did you think of Rebel Ridge?
