Buffalo Bayou Partnership New BioVac on Buffalo Bayou

As part of Buffalo Bayou Partnership’s Clean Green Initiative, the organization’s specially-designed boat, Bio-Vac, is up and running after several years of needed repairs. The industrial strength vessel vacuums floatable trash from collection booms along Buffalo Bayou and its neighboring bayous. Bio-Vac was conceived and created by Mike Garver, a Buffalo Bayou Partnership board member. The Houston transplant of almost six decades spent years recovering floating trash and debris from the bayous using rakes and nets before applying his proclivity for engineering to custom design the Bio-Vac. With Houston’s bayous all connected to Galveston Bay, Garver saw a need to collect the trash within city limits, before it reaches the state’s largest estuary. In 2013, Garver (in conjunction with other environmental enthusiasts) formed the organization, Texans for Clean Water. The advocacy group encourages collaboration between the government and business community to clean up Texas waterways. • Support BBP's Clean Green team by making a donation: https://app.etapestry.com/hosted/Buff... • • More information on BBP’s Clean-Up Program: • • Established in 2002 • • Funded by Harris County Flood Control District and Port Houston • • In 2019, over 1500 cubic yards of trash and debris were removed from the waterway • • The Bio-Vac was recently equipped with a brand new vacuum unit and 12-foot hose located on the front of the boat for easier handling. • • The boat is operated by BBP’s Field Supervisor, David Rivers, lovingly dubbed “Bayou Dave”. Rivers, who has worked for the organization for over 10 years, is on the bayou 5 days a week removing trash using the Bio-Vac and a variety of manual methods. • • The bayou’s trash problem stems from Houston’s drainage system which directs water and debris caught in curbside sewers through an underground system and into the bayou.
