The tumor is called Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis (PVNS) which is a rare disease found mainly in large joints like the knee or hip. • What is Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis (PVNS)? • A rare disease called Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis (PVNS) is most commonly found in young adults between the ages 20-45. PVNS usually affects the larger joints of the knee or hip. However, it can affect the ankle, shoulder, or elbow joint. • What causes PVNS? • It is unclear as to what causes PVNS. • What are the symptoms of PVNS? • The main symptoms of PVNS are chronic pain, swelling and stiffness of the joint. As the disease progresses, the intensity and duration of the pain increases. PVNS is often mistaken for arthritis. An X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the joint can help diagnosis PVNS. • How is PVNS treated? • Early diagnosis and treatment have the most successful results. PVNS can be treated with Traditional surgery or Arthroscopy by removing the lining of the joint. Surgery is the best option for treating PVNS, however, if it returns there are other options like radiation or total joint replacement.
