For example: The house was built in 1955. • In the example, “the house” does not “build”, it’s “built”, so it is a passive sentence. • → WHEN DO WE USE PASSIVE SENTENCES? • We normally use passive sentences when the object of the action is more important than the subject, or when we don’t know who did the action. • For example: • ACTIVE: The company employs 200 people. • PASSIVE: 200 people are employed by the company. • In this example, we are emphasising “200 people” by using the passive. • ACTIVE: The mechanic fixed my car yesterday. • PASSIVE: My car was fixed yesterday. • In this example, it is obvious that it was “the mechanic” who fixed “my car”, so we can use a passive structure and omit “the mechanic”. • → HOW DO WE CONSTRUCT PASSIVE SENTENCES? • Most passive sentences use “to be + past participle”. We conjugate the verb “to be” and we add the past participle of the main verb. • For example: • ACTIVE: The company employs 200 people. (present simple) • PASSIVE: 200 people are employed by the company. (pres. simple passive) • To transform from active to passive, follow these steps: • 1. Find the verb in the active sentence. • 2. Identify the tense. • 3. Find the subject and object. • 4. Change the subject for the object. • 5. Put the verb “to be” in the right tense (Step 2) • 6. Add the past participle of the main verb. • 7. Complete the sentence with other elements if necessary. • More awesome English-learning tips and explanations here: https://kseacademy.com/
