The CLI8 and PGI5 canon cartridges have a chip which recognizes the ink level in the printer and issues a disabling error message when the ink cartridge is emptied. This Canon CLI8 chip can be replaced with a new chip, or it can be reset with a Uni-Kit Canon resetter. The Canon resetter by Uni-Kit can be reused and will reset unlimited Canon chips.
