This is the solo piano version of the Symphonic Variations of Kaikhosru Sorabji. This video consists of Volume 2 of 3, variations 28-54 (of 81). The performance has been created by Alberto Vignani using Dorico notation software, Modartt Pianoteq and Samplicity Berlin Studio reverb. • A .flac file of the audio can be downloaded here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/668t59... • Notes on the performance of volume 2 by Alberto Vignani • This is my performance of the second part of Symphonic Variations solo piano version. All tempos, dynamics, pedals (except a few) are by me, even if I relied much on Dorico's 'intelligent' performance optimizations of phrasing and dynamics in polyphonic contexts (probably modeled on Bach). Maybe some passages are too fast for a reasonable human performance, and most of the shortest etude-like pieces are played quite mechanically. But there are also some things not feasible on mechanical pianos, in particular the selective resonances done with the 3rd pedal or the feature of Pianoteq that allows staccato playing over released dampers. • My favourites: no.50, 34, 31 • Group 1 - 48'31 • Variation 28 - 2'19 - A fast toccata, played with swing (or so Dorico claims) • Variation 29 - 2'26 - Added dynamic contrasts • Variation 30 - 6'46 - Starts quietly with soft pedal, then crescendo • Variation 31 - 15'05 - Long and fantastic, with repeated chords • Variation 32 - 1'43 (Quasi saltando) • Variation 33 - 2'25 - With many finger (not sound) semitone slidings. But I have also a version with true glissandos. • Variation 34 - 8'57 (Quasi rag indiana) - It has three elements: a drone (F#-B circling between the bass and the middle registers), some delicate chords in the middle-high registers, and a long melody with fast embellishments. The chords are captured with the 3rd pedal (together with the lowest F#) and provide a resonance over the whole piece. Compare with the passage named 'Quasi tambura' in the Passacaglia of Interludium B of OC • Variation 35 - 1'57 • Variation 36 - 3'42 (Molto moderato) • Variation 37 - 3'07 • Group 2 - 42'06 • Variation 38 - 8'26 (Tranquillo) - A piece in 5/8. Added global resonance halo with PIANOteq 'Harmonic pedal' • Variation 39 - 1'55 (Vivace assai) - Added dynamic contrasts • Variation 40 - 5'52 (Vivace) - One of the 'epic' variations (like no.12 and no.16 in the first part) • Variation 41 - 2'59 • Variation 42 - 2'30 (Vivace con impeto) • Variation 43 - 2'39 (Legatissimo) - 2'39 - Technicality: the big tuplets at the beginning are concatenated using gradual tempo changes, while the ones in the middle of the piece are 'straightened' by sudden tempo changes in order to keep a costant rate. • Variation 44 - 2'25 (Vivace, leggiero) - 2'25 • Variation 45 - 3'09 • Variation 46 - 2'33 • Variation 47 - 3'12 (Scorrevole) - A study in 5 versus 4 • Variation 48 - 5'02 (Libero con fantasia e grazia tenera e dolce) - 5'02 - Quite complex polyphony. Added global resonance halo with PIANOteq 'Harmonic pedal' • Variation 49 - 1'18 • Group 3 - 41'21 • Variation 50 - 9'15 - Slow and misty, over a pedal of A. Here the 3rd pedal is used to keep the three As in the bass always resonating. Variation 50 was marked 'Orch' in the manuscript. • Variation 51 - 1'41 • Variation 52 - 4'20 - A kind of odd melody moves in the middle register, while alternating dissonant chords float over and under it. I added selective resonances captured with the 3rd pedal over some complex chords in the bass. • Variation 52 was marked 'Orch' in the manuscript. • Variation 53 - 1'55 - Fast and (then) loud • Variation 54 - 24'07 (Passacaglia) - A passacaglia with (you guess it) 100 variations, whose repeated theme is made of a single 17/4 bar. A great crescendo to which I added also a very gradual accelerando from q=60 to about q=90. • Total duration 2h 11'58 • Alberto Vignani - June 2024 • Var. 28 00:30:13 • Var. 29. 00:02:43 • Var. 30. 00:05:07 • Var. 31 00:11:48 • Var. 32 00:26:49 • Var. 33 00:28:30 • Var. 34 00:30:53 • Var. 35 00:39:46 • Var. 36 00:41:41 • Var. 37 00:45:18 • Var. 38 00:48:22 • Var. 39 00:56:44 • Var. 40 00:58:37 • Var. 41 01:04:27 • Var. 42 01:07:23 • Var. 43 01:09:58 • Var. 44 01:12:35 • Var. 45 01:15:03 • Var. 46 01:18:13 • Var. 47 01:20:44 • Var. 48 01:23:57 • Var. 49 01:28:59 • Var. 50 01:30:20 • Var. 51 01:39:35 • Var. 52 01:41:17 • Var. 53 01:45:35 • Var. 54 01:47:32
