This is the second installment of my train horn compilation series. • ✭✭✭ • Of the many types of train horns out there, the Nathan P3 is my personal favorite. I simply love its pleasant, mellow tone. • The P3 was originally developed in the 1950s alongside Nathan's M-series horns, to produce a mellower sound and require less maintenance. Nathan's P-Series bells were sand-cast as opposed to die cast, producing a different acoustic that many people love. The original P3 horns, the majority of which are now extinct from the rails, played a 3-note chord. To musicians, this chord was a C#,E,A. In 1978, though, Nathan contracted out casting of their P-chimes, resulting in a new sound. These new cast horns can still be found on many railroads, with Canadian Pacific hosting the most of all the Class 1s, with CN coming in close behind. NS, UP, and BNSF retain a small number. All horns in this video are new cast, with the exception of 1:48, which is an old cast horn! • Most of these videos are from my local shortline, the Austin Western Railroad, which still retains a fair amount of P3 horns. • ✭✭✭ • Check out my photos on Instagram! / the_central_texas_railfan • Check out more videos on my second channel! / @thecentraltexasrailfan2 • Join my Discord Server to talk about railroads with like-minded people! / discord • ✭✭✭ • Music (if in the video) is from https://www.freesoundmusic.eu/ • / freesoundmusic
