After spending 3 amazing days in Jaipur, we are off to explore the painted towns (as Ilay Cooper fondly calls it) of Sekhawati. We will be staying here for the next 3N/4D and exploring places like Mandawa, Churu, Nawalgarh, Lohargal and Ramgarh Sekhawati. The opulence of Sekhawati lies in its havelis which were built by banias - starting in the 1830s and continuing till the early 20th century. Prior to this, Sekhawati had an illustrous history of architecture during the rule of Chauhan Rajputs, Kaimkhani Nawabs and Sekhawati Rajputs - many temples and forts were built during this era. One can still find remains of these architectural marvels dotting the present kshetra of Sekhawati. • But we are visiting these painted towns - popularly called 'the open art gallery of India' to document the extravagant havelis, chhattris, joharas, temples and water wells. • In this video we show you our first evening in Mandawa. As we stepped out of our heritage stay, we met this local who works as a guide in and around Mandawa. We decided to go on a recce with him around the town, visiting a few havelis, stepwells, temple and the market area. Also checked out a few restaurants worth visiting. In this episode we cover the Sneh Ram Ladia Haveli, one of the very few havelis in Mandawa you can visit as part of your heritage walk. havelis in Sekhawati are rapidly being demolished to make way for modern settlements, or are being converted to heritage hotels to welcome guest.
