The scene opens with Macbeth being adamantly opposed to harming King Duncan while he is a guest in Macbeth’s Castle. In the span of less than 40 lines, Lady Macbeth not only convinces Macbeth to kill him but does so in such a thoroughly convincing way as to take our breath away. • There is no reversal of purpose in Shakespeare so brilliantly carried out except for the seduction scene (Act 1 Scene 2) in Richard III, where Anne, who knows that Richard has killed her husband and father-in-law, goes from calling him a black magician and foul devil” in the scene’s opening to accepting his hand in marriage at the close. • What was Shakespeare's point in displaying these abrupt changes of heart? • Perhaps William Blake gives us a clue when he says - But many are not capable of a firm persuasion of anything. • Act 1 Scene7 - from the 2015 Square Talk, in association with Apollo Arts, production of Shakespeare's Macbeth - directed by Nicolas Walker.
