On my final day in the city, a local chef from Assam named Nikita reached out to me and invited me to have a traditional Assamese dinner with her family! Come with me as I spend 24 hours with an Assamese family in Phoenix, Arizona! • • Chef Nikita B. and I kicked off our day with an incredible Southern Indian breakfast at Utupi Café in Tempe. After grabbing everything we needed, we arrived at her family’s home, where I met her parents Samar and Rashmi. • • Nikita and her mother began preparing a number of Assamese specialties, including masor tenga (a fish curry containing fried fish, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and lemon juice), as well as an Assamese goat curry, bengena pitika (mashed eggplants with mashed potatoes and spices), amita khar, bootor dal, bengena fry, babori xaak, and more! • • It was the most amazing experience and I have to thank my friend Nikita for putting it all together at the last minute, as well as her family for kindly welcoming me to their home.
