As the Japanese army advances inland to kick off Hideyoshi’s second Korean invasion, the Japanese navy moves west to finish off the remnants of the Korean navy that survived the disaster at Chilchon Strait. The odds against the Koreans are desperate. Korea’s recently reappointed supreme naval commander Yi Sun-sin nevertheless intends to make a stand. He will do so on Korea’s southwestern tip, in Myeongnyang Strait between Jin Island and the mainland, his back to the Yellow Sea. The strait is also known as Uldolmok, the “Screaming Channel” or “Roaring Currents,” on account of the power of its tidal flow – a current that Admiral Yi plans to use to his advantage.
