Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Can you use an Excel icon set for text cells? • Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel Podcast, where we explore all things Excel. In this episode, we will be discussing a question from one of our seminar attendees in Knoxville, Tennessee. Kristin asked if it was possible to apply icon sets to text, specifically for ratings. And the answer is yes, but with a few limitations. • If you were hoping to use icon sets for text and have more than three ratings, I apologize, this video may not be able to help you. However, if you have three or less ratings, then I have a super secret trick that can make it work. First, we will need to convert the text ratings to numbers, such as -1, 0, and 1. Then, we can use conditional formatting and icon sets to display the appropriate icons. But what about the text? That's where the custom number format comes in. By specifying different zones for positive, negative, and zero numbers, we can make the corresponding text appear. • But wait, there's more! In this episode, we will also explore how to use this trick for more than three ratings. By using a combination of conditional formatting, custom number formats, and multiple icon sets, we can make it work for up to five ratings. It may seem like a lot of steps, but it's worth it to achieve the desired result. And as always, if you want to learn more about Excel and its various features, be sure to check out my book, Power Excel with MrExcel. • So, to sum it up, can you apply conditional formatting icon sets to text? Yes, but with some limitations. If you have three or less ratings, you can use the trick in this episode to make it work. And if you have more than three ratings, don't worry, we have a solution for that too. By using a combination of conditional formatting, custom number formats, and multiple icon sets, we can make it work for up to five ratings. So don't let anyone tell you that something can't be done in Excel, because with a little creativity and some help from MrExcel, anything is possible.
