Note(s): • Unless otherwise indicated, all times are set in local time, based on a 12-hour clock. • Aircraft Accident/Incident Overview: • The accident aircraft was a Boeing 767-222. It first flew in 1983. Under United Airlines, the accident aircraft was registered as N612UA and was equipped with 2 Pratt Whitney JT9D-7R4D engine(s). At the time of accident the aircraft was 18 years old. • Air Accident/Incident Overview: • On the 11th of September, 2001, United Airlines Flight 175 departed Logan International Airport in East Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America for Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California, United States of America at 8:14 AM. On board the aircraft were 56 passengers and 9 crew members. Among the 65 passengers and crew were 5 young men affiliated with Al-Qaeda. There plan was to hijack the aircraft, disable the flight crew, take over the flight controls and crash the aircraft into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, New York City, United States of America. Flight 175 would be one of four aircraft hijacked that day as part of the September 11 terrorist attack plot. • At 8:33 AM Flight 175 reached its cruising altitude of 31,000 feet or and was in touch with the Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). By this time alarm bells were ringing at the Boston ARTCC. At 8:14 AM they had lost contact with another aircraft that had left from the same airport as Flight 175 at 7:59 AM. That aircraft was American Airlines Flight 11. At 8:24 and 8:33 AM, air-traffic controllers at Boston heard three suspicious transmissions from Flight 11. However these transmissions were not just heard by the air-traffic controllers, but also by the pilots on-board Flight 175. Between 8:33 and 8:37 AM, while Flight 175 was still contact with the Boston ARTCC, air-traffic controllers asked numerous aircraft, including Flight 175 if they could see Flight 11. The other flights, including Flight 175 reported that they could see Flight 11 and that aircraft was roughly at 29,000 feet. At 8:40 AM Flight 175 enters into the airspace of the New York Center, and is instructed by the Boston ARTCC to contact the New York ARTCC. At 8:41 AM shortly after checking in with the New York ARTCC the flight crew from Flight 175 reports the suspicious transmission heard earlier which is believed to have come from Flight 11. The air-traffic controller in New York acknowledged the transmission. This would be the last communication air-traffic controllers would have with Flight 175. • Since the black boxes from Flight 175 were never retrieved from the ruble at the World Trade Center, little is know when exactly the hijackers began there assault. The only evidence about what took place in the aircraft during the hijacking are from the plane's GTE air-phone placed by two male passengers and a male flight attendant which began from 8:52 AM when the first phone call was placed and at 9:00 AM when the last phone call was placed. According the phone calls, both pilots had been killed, a flight attendant had been stabbed, mace or mustard gas had been sprayed by a hijacker(s) and that the aircraft was not flying normally. One male passenger reported to his parents that he and a few other passengers were considering storming the cockpit and taking the aircraft back from the hijackers. All of the phone calls were placed from the rear of the aircraft, suggesting the hijackers had herded the passengers and some of the cabin crew still alive to the back of the aircraft. • At 8:47 AM the aircraft's transponder signal changed twice within the span of a minute and soon after the aircraft began to deviate from its assigned flight path. At that same very moment the aircraft began to turn towards New York City and air-traffic controllers immediately moved several aircraft out of the way to prevent a collision with Flight 175. However at 8:52 AM the aircraft nearly collided with Delta Air Lines Flight 2315 reportedly missing it by 300 feet. At 8:58 AM the pilot hijacker in control of Flight 175 was completing the turn to New York City he put the aircraft in a sustained power dive right up until impact. As the aircraft descended more than 24,000 feet in roughly 5 minutes, in addition it almost collided with another aircraft, Midwest Express flight 7. • At 9:03 AM the aircraft impacted the South Tower of the World Trade Center killing all 65 passengers and crew on board and countless others in the tower. At 9:59 AM after burning for 56 minutes, the South Tower collapsed. • References: • Information: • https://aviation-safety.net/database/... • Photograph: • http://www.jetphotos.net/photo/492756 • Air-Traffic Control/Cockpit Voice Recording(s): • http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/20...
