Most common blood culture related questions from nurses and phlebotomists that we receive in the lab: • 1). “I have a hard stick, how do I collect?” Collect in a pediatric (yellow) bottle – do not send only one bottle of a set. Can order one or two pediatric blood cultures. • 2). “How do I collect a fungal blood culture?” A fungal blood culture is simply the aerobic bottle of a normal set – we change the hold time on the machine from 5 days to 28 days – and is normally added on to a regular blood culture set. • 3) “I have an AFB blood culture I need to collect, how?” Don’t ask me as that’s a send out test! Just kidding, collected in a special bottle and sent out for incubation. • 4) “Why are you calling me?
