The site first saw a military fort during the rule of the Roman Empire in 290AD and was possibly built by Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius. The castle we see today was built by King William of England and Duke of Normandy after the conquering of the country after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. • The castle would see multiple sieges between 1088 - 1399, and it would be abandoned in the 16th Century. It would fall into state ownership in 1925, and at the fall of France in 1940, it would be recommissioned into an operation military garrison for the British, Canadian, and American armed forces. • Today, the castle is owned by the English Heritage and it is open to tourists throughout the year. During the winter months, the site is open only at weekends. • More information can be found on the English Heritage website: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/v... • The castle is a 15-minute walk from the nearest station, Pevensey and Westham.
