The sciatic nerve is the largest in the body; it is comprised of five nerve roots that exit the spine and conform the nerve. Sciatic pain is felt through the nerve pathway when there is some compression or impingement of the nerve. It is often felt on only one side of the body, the left side being the most common. This translates to pain in the left leg, left back of the thigh or calve, glute or foot. • When a nerve is compressed or impinged, it becomes very painful, and pain can be worse at night, radiating to the lower part of the body wherever the nerve is tracing. This makes it difficult for patients to find a comfortable sleeping position. Also, since going to sleep means there are few to no distractions, patients can feel it more in addition to increasing pain. • Sciatic pain has a wide range. It can go from mild to intermediate to very chronic and debilitating. It could feel like a burning, sharp, and stabbing pain. It can manifest as tingling and numbness, or it could be a constant dull pain too. Regardless of how the pain manifests or how mild or severe, sciatic pain worsens as soon as people lie down to sleep, and patients look for the best possible position to sleep in through the night. • We often recommend patients with sciatica to sleep flat on their back; this position has less pressure on the spine and allows for more optimal alignment. This position doesn't introduce tension within the spine either. • Now, sleeping in a fetal position allows patients to flex their spine and artificially increase the spaces between the vertebrae, which potentially relieves some pressure from the nerves. • Sleeping on the right side of the body is also recommended to help relieve pressure from the left side, where sciatica is often found. This position can help reduce nerve impingement as well. When sleeping on the side, placing a pillow between the knees will help maintain proper spinal alignment and reduce uneven forces in the body. Patients with sciatica on their right side are recommended to sleep on their left side, but this is not the norm. • The best way to address sciatica and sleep is not to find a comfortable sleeping position and to manage the symptoms and pain while sleeping. The best is to address the underlying cause of sciatica, which often is an impinged nerve along the spine that is affecting one of the five nerve roots that conform the sciatic nerve. • Some imaging and other examination will be required to determine if there is nerve impingement and its location. This helps detect where the misalignment that is causing pressure is. Then, restoring the spine's normal alignment in the affected area will improve the actual cause of sciatica and reduce its symptoms, such as pain, and patients will start to sleep better. • So, getting evaluated and treated to address the cause is the best way to address sciatic pain and improve sleep, as well as the sleeping recommendations given here when suffering from sciatic pain. • You can learn more about this topic here: • https://www.scoliosisreductioncenter.... • Ready for a consultation or want more information?
