The world has changed a lot in the past four decades. This video provides a tour of global cities that have recently undergone dramatic urban development. Visualizing this change in this format can help explain recent global trends, both economic and geopolitical. • For example, cities in historically middle-income nations, such as Mexico City, experienced mostly suburban development, while cities in recently middle-income nations, such as Shanghai, saw a profound urban explosion in all aspects of the city. All of this stands in contrast to cities in most of the developed world, where populations have stagnated. This is why there are hardly any western cities in this timelapse. The western cities that provided a remarkable exception to this were Houston and Melbourne, as seen in the video. • This video was able to provide a brief glimpse into the subject of urbanization by showcasing a few cities.
