In this video we'll write the correct name for CBr4. To write the name for CBr4 we’ll use the Periodic Table and follow some simple rules. • Because CBr4 consists of two non-metals we don't need to balance the charges between atoms. Instead, we'll use prefixes to indicate the number of each element. • Mono = 1 • Di = 2 • Tri = 3 • Tetra = 4 • Penta = 5 • Hexa = 6 • Hepta = 7 • Octa = 8 • Non = 9 • Dec = 10 • -- Keys for Naming Molecular Compounds:-- • 1. Write the name for both elements. • 2. Change the ending of the second element to ide. • 3. Place prefixes in front of each element based on the number of atoms present. • 4. The prefix 'mono' is only used on the second non-metal in the chemical formula. • 5. There shouldn't be two vowels in a row. For example, when you have 'mono' in front of 'oxide' it is written 'monoxide', not 'monooxide'. • Naming Resources: • • Simple Ionic Compounds:    • Naming Simple Ionic Compounds   • • Compounds with Polyatomic ions:    • How to Name Ionic Compounds with Poly...   • • Compounds with Transition Metals:    • How to Name Ionic Compounds with Tran...   • • Molecular Compounds:    • Naming and Formula Writing for Molecu...   • • Naming Acids:    • How to Name Acids: Examples and Practice   • For a complete tutorial on naming and formula writing for compounds, like Carbon tetrabromide and more, visit: • http://www.breslyn.org/chemistry/naming • • Drawing/writing done in InkScape (http://www.InkScape.org).
