Classic cars of the 1950s to the 1970s graced many a driveway, road and garage when I was growing up in the '70s. Early in the decade our family car was an early '60s MG 1100, followed by a 1966 Volvo 121 then a 1972 144S, which would soldier on until the early 1980s when it was replaced by an early (1979) SAAB 900 Turbo. Next door a retired gent had a brush-painted Ford Consul Mk1. In the houses opposite were, over time, a FIAT 127, Mini, Austin Allegro estate, Toyota Crown SuperSaloon (replacing a Mk1 Celica), MGB GT, and a Jeans-edition VW Beetle, to name just a few, with other cars on our road including Opel Manta SR, Austin 1300, FIAT 126, Mk1 Ford Cortina, Range Rover, Hillman Imp and a silver Avenger. • A friend's dad ran a rare BMW 3.0S (ex Sir Francis Chichester) which shared driveway space with a FIAT 128. • In this collection of 150 recent images are many of the cars - secondhand and new - that I remember in neighbouring streets and driveways back then. They include the usual Fords, Vauxhalls and products of British Leyland, mixed in with a few rarities that while technically around at the time, were only spotted occasionally (eg NSU Ro80, Alfa Romeo Alfetta, Audi 80 and Moskvitch - an example of the latter in estate form belonged to a neighbour in our road). • The selection also represents the shifting sands of the British car market. Ten years earlier virtually every car on the road would have been of British manufacture, but this was to change significantly throughout the '70s as wave upon wave of (mainly) Japanese-built imports began to make a serious dent into the sales figures of the mainstream home-grown offerings. Cars from France, Germany and Italy were also beginning to make an impression. While most of these cars were numerous back then, the effects of rampaging rust, mechanical decline and simply the passage of time, make survivors of any cars featured here something of a scare sight today. • Then they were just cars, new cars or secondhand cars, yet now they all fall under the umbrella term of classic cars due to their age. • Manufacturers featured include the following, in no particular order: • BL (inc Austin-Morris) • Volvo • Vauxhall • Ford • Citroen • Alfa Romeo • FIAT • Reliant • Lancia • BMW • Talbot • Hillman • Sunbeam • Wolseley • Triumph • Rover • Toyota • Datsun • MG • Renault • Lada • Audi • Singer • DAF • Mitsubishi • SAAB • Riley • Simca • VW • Jaguar • Wartburg • Moskvitch • Lotus • Opel • Honda • NSU • Hopefully I've included most of the common and not-so-common cars here although inevitably some makes and models will have slipped through the net. Let me know in the comments if you remember any of the cars featured being in your family's automotive history, or indeed in neighbouring driveways in the 1970s? Comments about these now-classic cars from the 1970s and earlier welcomed as always. • To see all the classic car videos now on the channel, please visit the video list page here: •    / oldclassiccarrj   • Thanks for watching. • #classiccar #classiccars #1970scars
