Syringe feeding a newborn to avoid nipple confusion

There are many reasons why a newborn would need supplemented after birth. I am seeing more inductions and c-sections where milk is delayed for days and colostrum, while it’s supposed to be in very small amounts, is still not quite enough to prevent baby from losing too much weight. The master goal of breastfeeding is: feed the baby and protect the milk supply. By starting hand expression and pumping in the first 24 hours, we can help promote both of these goals. We get as much milk going as possible and help lay down the hormone foundation for making milk once medications have cleared the body and all that extra swelling in your hands, feet and breasts have been peed off (yes, that swelling can be preventing your milk from increasing in volume). While bottles are a great option, many worry it will lead to a bottle preference. We used the bottle nipple with a syringe of all of mama’s liquid gold in this video to help mimic feeding at the breast for a sleepy baby who wasn’t efficiently breastfeeding yet. • #syringefeeding #csectionrecovery #csectionmama #bellybirth #newborn #jaundicebaby #jaundicetreatment #jaundice
