A central line or central venous access device (CVAD) is an IV line that is inserted into a large vein to provide medications, chemotherapy, nutrition or fluids. • For more information, please visit the Interventional Radiology learning hub: https://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/IGT • This video will show family members, teachers, daycare providers and other caregivers how to manage the emergency procedures for a CVAD. Caregivers of children with a CVAD should review this video with their child’s health-care team before attempting any of these procedures. • These instructions are part of a teaching program for families of patients at The Hospital for Sick Children. They are provided in addition to detailed hands-on training. We urge you not to follow these instructions without training and advice from a healthcare professional who understands your child’s unique needs. Please also review these instructions with your doctor to check if they are suitable for your situation. • Health-care providers are guided by provincial or federal regulations for safely handling hazardous medications which mandate specific types of personal protective equipment (i.e. masks, gowns, gloves, protective eye wear). • At the time of publication of this video, recommendations for specific types of protective equipment required for families handling hazardous medications at HOME were not available. Families are encouraged to discuss this information with their health-care provider. • VIDEO CHAPTERS • 00:00 - Introduction • 00:14 - Overview • 01:40 - Emergency kit • 02:01 - Before you start any procedure • 02:22 - What to do if the line breaks, is cut, or cracks • 04:04 - What to do if the cap falls off • 05:10 - What to do if the central line is pulled out • 06:37 - What to do if the dressing comes loose • 08:07 - What to do if the dressing falls off • 08:20 - REMEMBER • Subscribe to the AboutKidsHealth YouTube channel: http://ow.ly/CzrN50ClHN3 • Follow us on: • Facebook: / aboutkidshealth • Twitter: / aboutkidshealth • Pinterest: / aboutkidshealth
