Welcome to another insightful session in our ongoing Environment, Ecology, and Biodiversity Current Affairs Series, curated especially for UPSC IAS aspirants. In this video, renowned educator Sudhanshu Mishra Sir delves into the pressing issue of Silicosis—a grave occupational disease plaguing countless workers in India. • 📰 Why in the News? • The Supreme Court has recently directed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to oversee the impact of silicosis-prone industries and ensure proper compensation processes. This directive comes in response to a petition by the People’s Rights and Social Research Centre, a Delhi-based NGO, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. • 📌 What is Silicosis? • Silicosis is a progressive and incurable lung disease caused by long-term exposure to silica dust. It is commonly found among workers in the mining, construction, and manufacturing sectors. Silicosis not only leads to severe health issues like shortness of breath, cough, and fever but can also result in permanent disability. Despite its severity, Silicosis is preventable with the right control measures and technology. • 🌍 Silicosis in India • In India, Silicosis is prevalent in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and several others. Workers in these regions are often exposed to silica dust, leading to a high incidence of this disease. • 🛡️ Government Measures • Silicosis is recognized as a notified disease under the Mines Act (1952) and the Factories Act (1948). These laws mandate safe working environments and occupational health care to prevent such diseases. Additionally, the ‘Silicosis Portal’ hosted by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment serves as a platform for addressing silicosis cases. • 🩺 Occupational Diseases Linked to Silicosis: • Asbestosis - Lung scarring from asbestos exposure. • Pneumoconiosis - Common in coal miners and power station workers. • Byssinosis - Affects textile workers, also known as Monday Fever. • Lead Poisoning - Prevalent in paint and battery industries. • Join Sudhanshu Mishra Sir in this crucial discussion to better understand the implications of Silicosis and the steps needed to protect vulnerable workers. • 📚 Watch, Learn, and Prepare with Sudhanshu Sir for UPSC IAS! • Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more videos on Environment, Ecology, and Current Affairs that are essential for your UPSC preparation. • #Silicosis #CurrentAffairs #UPSCPreparation #EnvironmentAndEcology #SudhanshuMishraSir #UPSC2024 #IASNext ##Biodiversity #EnvironmentalIssues #OccupationalHealth #SilicaDust #SupremeCourt #NGT #NHRC #IndianWorkers #UPSC2024 #CivilServicesPreparation #JudicialReforms #PublicHealth #IASPreparation #GovernmentPolicies #CurrentAffairs2024 #Ecology #EnvironmentalAwareness #SocialJustice #SilicosisAwareness #IndianEconomy
