Medicaid is a program that provides free or low-cost health insurance to millions of Americans. The federal government pays for a good chunk of Medicaid and sets guidelines for the program. States have choices on how they design their program, so Medicaid varies state by state, and may have a different name in your state. • In the majority of states, it covers all children and adults who live just above the federal poverty line.
