In the 1940s, PR guru Edward Bernays was hired by the United Fruit Company to promote their South American operations. Nevertheless, the Guatemalan people remained unconvinced and resented exploitation of their resources and of themselves by a foreign company. In 1954, Bernays used his skills to present the disgruntled Guatemalans as communists and a threat to American interests. He used press releases and produced an anonymous Report on Guatemala, which was delivered to every member of congress. In 1954, the government of Colonel Jacobo Arbenz (democratically elected by 65 percent of the voter) was overthrown by U.S.-backed forces.
