It seems so small and far away how could anyone even see it? Well luckily we have some excellent optics available these days but the question is, How much Zoom will I need? It is a great question and I get asked all the time how much I use when going beyond 1,000 Yards and the truth is I really don’t need that much. One thing to keep in mind is zooming in does not make the picture clearer, you can just see the objects easier. I set some targets at 500 Yards and demonstrate different levels of zoom at that distance with the vortex Viper PST 6-24 then we back out to 1,000 Yards to take a look at some really far, small targets. The equivalent of a 1.4” circle at 100 Yards the 14” plates at 1,000 seem impossible to see let alone hit the target! But the biggest reason I run high magnification scopes is to better spot dust trace from bullet impacts that far out.
