Procedure for lowering of a Life boat • 1. Minimum of 5 persons are required to lower the L/B. • 2. One person goes inside the L/B and passes the end of toggle painter and plugs the drain. • 3. Check all lifeline and falls are clear of L/B. • 4. Make fast the other end of toggle painter on a strong point forward of the ship. • 5. Remove forward and aft gripes and both person stand by for passing bowing tackle and tricing pendant. • 6. Remove harbour safety pin. • 7. Make sure the ship’s side is free of everything, no water or garbage is there. • 8. Now, one person lift’s the dead mans handle slowly which releases the brake. • 9. The boat along with cradle sides downward till it comes to the embarkation deck. • 10. By pulling tricing pendant , bring it alongside the embarkation deck. • 11. Persons embark inside the boat. • 12. Now, tricing pendant is removed and the whole load comes on falls. • 13. Now, boat is further lowered with deadman’s handle. • 14. As soon as the boat comes around 1meter above the sea-water, it can be released. • • LIFEBOAT EQUIPMENTS AND ITS USAGES • • A compass shall be provided (so that the survivor could make out the direction). • Sufficient numbers of Crutches are to be provided equalent to the oars. • Sufficient buoyant oars: Buoyant oar are provided to give adequate headway. The oars are to be provided such a way that it should float in water. • A survival manual is to be provided to give adequate guidance to the survivors. • 2 painters shall be provided. (Painter means boat rope). One shall be secured along with a toggle so that it can be removed off immediately, and another shall be permanently attached (to the stern). • 2 boat hooks are to be provided. These are used to hook on and hold closed to a Rescue craft and the other end could be used as a wearing out spar (to keep off from any vessel or object). • A buoyant bailer shall be provided so that the same can be used to collect the water. • 2 buckets are to be provided for collecting water from the buoyant bailer. • 2 Hatchets are to be provided to chop up any rope obstructing the safes casting off from the sinking vessel. (To be kept safe distance from mentally upset survivor) • 3 liters of water per person.(to be replaced frequently if provided from own board fresh water tank, Sealed fresh waters are also supplied with the validity of 3 years) • A sea anchor shall be provided to check the drift as well as to prevent the boat from capsizing during high swells. • Wave quenching oil with a drop bag.( used to break the waves during rough seas, prevent the capsizing of the boat.) • Food rations are provided for every person (ie.10000 kj of rations per person) . The validity is to be checked and to be replaced on expiry. Validity of food is 5 yrs. • 3 rustproof, graduated, drinking vessels for rationing the fresh water. • One dipper for fresh water. (To take out water from the container). • A torch must be provided, water proof, with spare bulb and spare batteries, It is designed such a way that able to sent Morse by flash.(All Seafarers are to up keep the proficiency in Morse code at all time). • Smoke floats are provided for day signals – 2 nos – are to be kept in the same water tight containers. • 4 in no parachute flares provided in the same water tight container. • Hand flares are proved with a water tight container. (Six Nos). • (Remember 2+4+6) • A signal card (solas no.2) is provided to understand and use the search and rescue signals. • Sea Sickness tablets are to be issued to compulsory given to all person.( Total sickness tablet is 6 nos per person). • An FRP repair kit in waterproof container. • A sea sickness bag per person is provided with. • An approved type first aid kit is provided with a validity of 5 yrs. • Three tin openers are provided for cutting the tinned food. (Additional food are carried by nominated persons. So while doing Boat drill it is a prudent practice that carrying all items by nominated people. (keep and carry additional food in a emergency bag.) • A jack knife is provided with. • A Helio gram (signaling mirror) is provided to attract the attention of Search and Rescue craft by focusing the sun light. The direction of usages is imposed on it. • A whistle is provided to attract the attention of isolated survivor or a rescue vessel. • 2 buoyant rescue quoits with 30m of buoyant line attached with, the same can be used to bring the isolated survivor to close. • A manual bilge pump is provided and is to be tried out as per LSA maintenance Register. The inlet of the pipe should be submerged in a plastic container consist of sufficient fresh liter water. The outlet also to be put in the same container so that the same water could be re-circulated, and to be tried out to ensure the smooth functioning of hand pump. • Subscribe channel : / @peresbennet
