The film states loud and clear that friendship between a boy and a girl ends in love without exception. And, the first time director Stanley has also proved that more than heroism, it is screenplay that matters the most for a film. • Machchan, when you and Shweta (Sneha) were walking together, you guys looked as if you were 'made for each other' , says Shrikanth's friend, Venkatesh and lays the foundation for all the gossips that followed them. • Shrikanth is a poverty-ridden student who is so desperate for money that he goes to a women's college to collect money for his MCA studies. He gets acquainted with rich girl Shweta (played by Sneha). Their friendship is misinterpreted by everybody and soon gossips begin (onscreen too!). But, they continue their chaste behavior. However, Time plays its game. They succumb to hormones rush and fall in love with each other. • Emotional conflict- that is what the director has depicted throughout the film. The way these characters have been portrayed without confusing their emotions make this story immensely involving. • Shrikanth has qualified with high grades to play the role of a college going hero. This is something even Ajith, Vikram and Vijay weren't able to accomplish. He has improved greatly with his emoting too when compared to his first film. • Sneha has a family friend who happens to have a secret crush on her. He asks Shrikanth repeatedly if they are lovers. If the irritation showed by Shrikanth in this instance is natural, then the cry he raises in the climax when he chops down a tree that has his and Sneha's names engraved is simply over-acting. • Click here for April Madhathil Photo galleryIt looks artificial when they address each other very respectfully in spite of being so close to each other. • Sneha has lots of extreme close ups throughout the film. She has put on some weight and glow. This Lip-beauty steals our hearts away when she flashes her eyelashes and waits with expectation. • The film has its share of poetic scenes- when Shrikanth clears his friends' doubts about love, just when Sneha gets accustomed to Shrikanth's poverty the way he destroys friendship with love and the way Shrikanth's love for his mother slowly makes Sneha fall in love with him again are examples of these. • The best scenes are those in which both think that they are wrong about mistaking pure friendship for love and hide their love for each other and feel guilty about it. • The film creates a longing in the hearts of people who have never been to college. The miserable time the seven friends have during the semester break without seeing each other and the way they meet at a friend's house portrays reality. • Practicality is reflected in Gayathri Jayaram's character- the way she threatens Shrikanth with her sudden outburst of love for him and the way she finally gives him her wedding invitation. • Karunaas is busy teasing girls throughout the film. Quiet a few of these instances have been chopped away by the Censor Board. The Top 10 countdown of girls carries the real college spirit. • Click here for April Madhathil Photo galleryYouthfulness and energy runs amuck in Yuvan Shankar Raja's music. The songs are sweet. This Junior Ilayaraaja has been toiling hard with the background scores too. But, it's extremely annoying when all the friends get together to sing 'Manasae manasae' to the tune of 'Pasumai niraintha ninaivugalae'. • Panneer Selvam's quality cinematography and an engaging editing are two more points in favor of the film. • In the climax, Sneha and Shrikanth sit (with their backs to each other) near the tree that was chopped down in their memory and cry, thinking about their failed love and Sneha's pending marriage the next day (the aerial shot used here deserves a special mention for its good looks). Sneha's father Devan decides to unite the lovers without thinking about the consequences. This scene reeks of artificiality that's even beyond cinematic norms. • Hey! When the whole world gossips about their relationship, they overstrain themselves denying it, but, eventually end up falling in love with each other. Then why did they put up such a show initially? And, is it not possible to have genuine friendship between a boy and a girl? • In spite of all this, the film deserves applause for recreating the college environment on the screen with its joys, celebrations, friendships, parting-away's and love.
