F35B Lightning II Vertical Landing and Takeoff Aboard the USS Wasp

U.S. Marines and Sailors conduct 24-hour flight operations in international airspace aboard the USS Wasp (LHD 1) in the Philippine Sea. Maritime prepositioning enables deployment flexibility and an increased capability to respond rapidly to a crisis or contingency with a credible presence. • The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the aircraft. Similar in size to the A variant, the B sacrifices about a third of the A variant's fuel volume to accommodate the vertical flight system. Unlike other variants, the F-35B has no landing hook. The STOVL/HOOK control instead engages conversion between normal and vertical flight.
