In this Basics of Boating video, he explains the capabilities of modern fish finders and what each feature is used for. • Here's a breakdown of the typical features you'll find on a fish finder unit, as described by Garrett: • Boat GPS • This is one of the most critical capabilities, for a few reasons. First, this is how a fish finder unit records your track lines— that way, you can accurately track where you've been. It also allows you to set a waypoint if you find that coveted hot-spot, allowing you to return to the exact location time and time again. Finally, GPS capabilities allow your unit to show the contours of body of water. You'll be able to better identify where fish might be— all while avoiding too-shallow water. • 2D Sonar • 2D Sonar is a pretty standard feature that gives a simple view of what's underneath your boat. • Side Imaging • This is sonar that's projected from the back of the boat. It gives you a view of where fish and important features are located around you. • Down Imaging • This is similar to 2D sonar in that it depicts the view underneath your boat. However, it's far more detailed than 2D sonar. As a result, the images are far more easy to interpret and useful for fishing. • 360 Imaging • This is a broad scope of what's going on beneath the surface, including the bottom view and what's located around you. • Forward Sonar • Arguably one of the best fish finder features, forward sonar shows fish in the water, your bait, and how the fish are interacting with your bait.
