Reason enough to visit Luis Valença at his Centro Equestre Da Leziria Grande in Portugal. • Luis Valença is an impressively wise and kind man. He is very hospitable and very generous in sharing his knowledge and experience. • By training with him I could witness some echoes of the perfectionism and the wisdom of Nuno Oliveira. Luis Valença was really close to Oliveira for over 20 years. During the week I was able to witness some of the spirit and ideas of Nuno Oliveira and François Baucher while training in Luis Valença's riding arena. • • During my visit Luis Valença talked extensively about the background of all training components he uses to train his beautiful horses: • • Longeing • • Work in hand • • Riding • • Long lining • • Pilar work • • High school • • The art of fighting • Full of enthusiasm and dedication he demonstrated all training components. • The exercises he uses are the circle, shoulder-in, haunches-in, renvers, half-pass, pirouette, piaffe, passage, spanish walk, levade and the high school jumps, • After several theoretical explanations and demonstrations, I was allowed to work with his horses under his supervision. • Just like Luis Valença, his Lusitano and Arabian stallions I was working with, were very generous in sharing their expertise, for which I am extremely grateful! • Through Luis Valença's explanations, demonstrations and lessons I received a thorough and complete overview of his way of training and schooling horses.
