Pole Work Ideas (3) • Here we have Duke and Prince working In-Hand and on the lunge with a few pole exercises. • The first video clip is of Duke. • Here I work on control and park (halt) to help manage anticipation over the pole. Duke has a very quick brain and wants to please. Although this is lovely it’s hard not to get carried away and try to run before we can walk. While he picked up side pass over the pole very quickly, I then lost control of the quarters. So here I am breaking it down to small steps, walking over the pole, halting, then moving around him without asking for anything else. • Next we move into a side step and halt again. Teaching Duke to halt off the whistle has been a really useful tool. To support this I focus on both my body language and position, so it’s really helpful having my phone on the fence to allow me to look back on what I’ve done to spot my mistakes! I play with this exercise by jumbling things up so he doesn’t anticipate or get bored. This may include halting before and after the pole, side passing one step and then walking on again, side stepping the other way…to keep him listening and interested. • Prince is a year younger. To help him I use a stick to encourage the quarters and shoulders at times. Both Ponies I trained In-Hand, teaching them about gentle pressure and release. I wanted them to learn to work over the back and into a soft contact. With these aids I can transfer this work to ridden and move onto the lateral work with good understanding. • *(You can watch me training the boys, In-Hand with my videos on YouTube-Free)* • We also have the agility training and competitions that we like to do, this is about a loose line. I need to get the basics of my training and control of the movement for each task first, before I can have a loose line. The side stepping over the pole is for both agility and working equitation, as I am keen to do both you will see me working in both ways. • Sheila Jones Equine Behavioural Training helps me with the Agility and then The International Horse Agility Club offer the online competitions! • The next set of Videos are of Duke working over some poles on the lunge. • I have set the poles up on a fan / circle, with the inner three poles wider to encourage him to stretch, flex and push from behind. The outer poles are slightly closer to encourage him to collect. Giving him more to focus on really works his brain. Just in walk! • Last set of poles I have used a few cavaletti’s slightly raised. One has blue pipe over it and the other has yellow foam to help encourage Duke to look down, stretch and use himself. • I hope this gives you a few more ideas while we have difficult weather. I have more on my Facebook page - Sam Turner Dressage. • Enjoy! • Thanks to; • Aviform Nutrition UK - Horse Dog • #equine #equinegroundwork#dressagetraining #younghorsetraining #samturnerdressage #cobscan #ponies #frostyweather #equestrian #horse #cobs #animals
