Aerial footage of the Brouwers Dam. Completed at the end of 1971, the main purpose of the dam was to protect the islands of Schouwen Duiveland and Goerree Overflakkee. The dam was built in a position where it could take advantage of two large sandbanks: the Middelplaat and the Kabbelaarsplaat. The two sandbanks were connected together thus requiring a north and a south section of dam to be built. The southern section was closed by means of a return cableway, which is where crane-like cabins pass along a cable and plunge large concrete blocks into the sea from above. The Northern section was shallower and thus was closed via twelve caissons. For further information please visit http://www.deltawerken.com/420
