I think some are made with a more hollow body, but this one is solid with an opening just behind the banjo head. I drilled a small soundhole in the back and linked the sound chamber to the soundhole on the front as well. After a light setup, it plays well and has a folksy, twangy sound that's cooler and more useful than a Martin Backpacker, at least.
