Bennett and I tackle Boundary Peak, the tallest mountain in Nevada. Located very close to the California/Nevada Border in the Boundary Peak/White Mountains Wilderness and the Inyo National Forest, Boundary Peak rises 13,146 feet about sea level. We quickly discover that this is a serious mountain climb. Will we make it? • *DISCLAIMER* The following information records my impressions of each trail and road at the time our trip in October 2020. Road conditions are constantly changing and it is your responsibility to do necessary research, bring appropriate survival and rescue equipment, and navigate yourself and your vehicle responsibly and safely. I am not liable for anyone who gets themselves in trouble after reading my impressions. Be safe out there. • For hiking, you essentially have two options. The Trail Canyon Trail or the Queen Canyon Trail. There are three roads which are all options for arriving at one of the trailheads. • Option 1: The Trail Canyon Road. This was the route we took. For the most part, this road was a pretty smooth dirt road. I tried to film some of the most bumpy parts of the road, as shown in the video. Like I was saying in the video, you could PROBABLY complete this route in a low clearance car but you would need to drive very carefully. Furthermore, if the weather is bad or has been bad, the road might be much worse. There were a few small creek crossings which might have water in them if it's been raining. If you have a vehicle with medium to high clearance, you should have no trouble on this road, but I would avoid it in a low clearance vehicle. This road starts at the junction of highways 264 and 773 and takes you to the Trail Canyon Reservoir and Trail. • Option 2: Chiatovitch Road. This was the route we took on our way home. This road was much less bumpy than the Trail Canyon Road. It's obvious that this road gets way more attention when it comes to maintenance and grading. If you are in a low clearance car, this is definitely the route you'll want to take. I thought I saw somewhere online that said this road is closed due to private land closures, but that was not the case. It's a public road all the way to the trailhead. This road starts a little ways South of the 264/773 junction and takes you to the Trail Canyon Trail. It is clearly marked. • Option 3: Take Trail Canyon road or Chiatovitch Road all the way up to the Queens Canyon Trailhead. This is what we did and it was definitely the wrong choice. As soon as you pass the Trail Canyon Trailhead, the road gets super gnarly. I know it looked tame in the video but trust me, this road is intense. I would only recommend this to people with serious off road equipment and experience. • Option 4: Queen Canyon Road (01N14.) This is probably the most popular route. I think it's the shortest route but keep in mind, this is a 4wd road. We didn't drive this road but talked to someone who did. They said the road was manageable and they didn't feel unsafe while driving it, but driving it in anything less than a truck/jeep/SUV would not be possible. This road shoots out from Highway 6 near the California/Nevada Border and takes you straight to the Queen Canyon Mine and Trailhead. • The following links you to a map showing each road as well as each of the trail options. • https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_... • If you look closely, you can see that by starting at the trail canyon trail, you can take a diversion trail to the right before climbing up the scree field. That will take you to the spot where I did a check in on that first saddle. In my opinion, this is the best route you could take if you don't have a vehicle capable of getting you to the Queens Canyon Trailhead. • Be safe out there! • Did you like this hiking video?
